Bhatner Fort is located in the Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan. This oldest fort in Rajasthan has a very rich and regal past. It was built around 1700 years ago.  Bhati Rajputs built the fort in the 3rd century. The rich history of the fort is amazing. The most important role of the fort was to defend the city from attackers. 

Bhatner Fort was built on a planned or strategic place on the ancient route. It helped connect central Asia to the Indian subcontinent. The fort has observed many battles. In addition, many changes in the rules from the time of the Delhi Sultanate to the Mughals.

History of Bhatner Fort 

The Bhatner Fort of Rajasthan was built in the 3rd century AD. The fort has a rich and legendary past from the time it was established.  Bhupat, the son of the king of Bhati Rajput built the fort. The establishment of the fort in Hanumangarh was a strategic move. It was built to control important trade routes between India and central Asia. 

Similarly, the fort has seen many changes in rulers and takeovers over the centuries. For instance, the fort has stood strong against many attacks from Akbar, Timur, and Mahmud of Ghazni. Bhatner fort was under the Rajputs for many years. However, In 1805, Bikaner’s Raja Surat Singh captured the fort. 

After that, the town’s name from Bhatner changed to Hanumangarh, for lord Hanuman who himself is a symbol of strength. Moreover, the fort has also been an important spot for military defense. The strong structure and strategic location of the fort have helped a lot.

Architecture and Structure

Bhatner Fort is built in traditional Rajput design. The fort was considered to be an architectural marvel of that time.  It was built in a way to protect the town during the battles. In addition, the fort has big and thick walls made of stones which helps in defense. 

In addition, the fort has 52 small towers which help in keeping an eye on the moment of enemies. The fort has three huge gates supported by iron spikes which stop the attack of enemies or animals. In conclusion, the structure of the fort was built in a way that helped in defense of the region.  

Present condition of Bhatner Fort 

In the present day, Bhatner Fort stands as a symbol of its honored and historic past. Even though, some parts of the fort have been ruined because of weather and time. Despite such a long time, the walls and gates of the fort are still standing because of its strong architecture.

How to reach Bhatner Fort 

  • By air – Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport of Amritsar is the nearest airport. One can take a bus or taxi from Amritsar to Hanumangarh. 
  • By train – Hanumangarh railway station is well-connected to major cities like Delhi, Jaipur, and Bikaner. One can take an auto from the station to Bhatner Fort easily. 
  • By road – Hanumangarh is well connected to many cities by road. One can take a bus or travel by car to Hanumangarh. 
Some tips for visiting
  1. The best time to visit Bhatner Fort is between October to March. As the temperature is normal and a bit cold in these months. 
  2. One must wear comfortable shoes while visiting the fort as it has an uneven surface and large areas to explore. 
  3. There is no such facility of water and refreshments inside the fort. Hence, must carry water and some snacks. 
  4. After that, must hire a guide for your visit to Bhatner Fort as he can enhance your experience by telling the history and stories of the fort. 
  5. Keep a camera or mobile phone with you to capture the most amazing views and structure of the fort, 
  6. You can also visit some other spots near the fort like Brahmani Mata Temple and Archaeological Site.
