Khatu Shyam Mandir – Haven Of Miracles

Khatu Shyam Mandir is located in a small village called Khatu. It is near the Sikar district of Rajasthan.  The temple is dedicated to one of the avatars of lord Krishna called Khatu Shyam ji. The temple is one of the most admired temples in India. This blessed temple attracts many visitors throughout the year.

History of Khatu Shyam Mandir 

The history behind the origin of Khatu Shyam Mandir is full of devotion and myths. Roop Singh Chauhan and his wife Nirmala Kanwar built the temple for Barbarika who now is worshipped as Khatu Shyam. He was one of the respected people from Mahabharat. Barbarika was a Pandava, Bhima’s grandson, and Ghatotgacha’s son. He promised to help the weaker side during the war because he was very powerful. 

Lord Krishna knew that barbarika had the power to change the results of the war. So, he came as a Brahmana in front of Barbarika. And lord asked him to destroy the leaves of a tree with his arrow. He completed the task as Barbarika was capable of doing it. But, lord Krishna hid one leaf under his feet and an arrow came right on his feet and stopped. 

Barbarika understood that the Brahmana was lord Krishna. Later on, lord Krishna asked Barbarika’s head as a sacrifice. He agreed but he wanted to witness the war. After that, his head was placed on the hilltop so that he could see the war. 

After that, when the war was finished, lord Krishna blessed Barbarika as the god of Kali Yuga. Barbarika was given the name Shyam, another name for lord Krishna. Later, his head was buried in a small village in Rajasthan named Khatu. After many years, a temple was built in the 11th century famously known as Khatu Shyam Mandir. 

Architecture of Khatu Shyam Mandir 

The Khatu Shyam Mandir is built beautifully in Rajasthani art and style. The temple is built with tiles, marble, and unique stones which look majestic. After that, the entrance gate of Khatu Shyam is built grandly and beautifully. The main sanctum where the idol of Khatu Shyam Ji is placed is built with golden sheets. 

The temple has a beautiful prayer haul, known as jagmohan. Devotees can also see Shyam Kund, which is a sacred water pond. Therefore,  people also bathe in this water as it purifies one’s soul.  The temple’s entrance and exit gate have many beautiful paintings. 

Shyam Bagicha is a garden near the temple where people can take flowers for the idol. In addition,  the garden also has a memorial of a very old and great devotee, named Aloo Singh. However,  the white marble, artwork, and the spiritual aura of the temple make Khatu Shyam a haven on earth. 

The Nishaan Yatra 

The ritual of the Nishaan yatra is one of the most remarkable yatra of Khatu Shyam. Thousands of devotees come every year to be a part of the yatra. The devotees carry a sacred flag throughout the yatra to offer to the lord. The flag signifies the devotion and love of devotees. The devotees travel by foot with the flag to the temple of Khatu Shyam. 

People usually start their journey from Rengus to Khatu. Throughout this ritual, people chant prayers, dance, and sing bhajans. During the phalgun mela, most people join the yatra. Devotees enjoy this experience as it builds up their faith and spirituality. 

Rituals at Khatu Shyam Mandir 

Khatu Shyam Mandir is full of blessings from lord Krishna. The spiritual and positive atmosphere of the temple attracts many devotees throughout the year. For instance, Devotees from different places come to take the blessings and perform the rituals at the temple. A few of the rituals are – 

• Mangla, sandhya, and shayan aarti –  The Mangla aarti is a morning aarti performed at 4:30 am to wake up the lord. The sandhya aarti is the evening aarti. After that, at night shayan aarti is performed. 
• Ekadashi – Ekadashi at Khatu Shyam Mandir is celebrated with full devotion and faith. Many people gather together to do aarti and sing bhajans. People do fasting on Ekadashi as a sign of devotion. Devotees offer fruits, flowers, and sweets to Shyam Baba temple is full of a positive and happy atmosphere. In other words,  one can purify their soul and bad karma by fasting on Ekadashi. 
• Phalgun mela – phalgun mela is most celebrated festival at khatu shyam. during Feb and March, the mela is organized. This day is celebrated for Shyam Baba as a way of honor and love. Many devotees reach Khatu Shyam to enjoy this auspicious day. A lot of religious activities, bhajans, and decorations are done during the phalgun mela.

1. Devotees take a bath at Shyam Kund before entering the temple. The Shyam kund purifies one’s soul and has healing powers. 
2. The temple has a never-ending flame called akhand jyoti. The flame burns all the time which also represents Shyam Baba’s existence. 
3. The temple is also a part of a charitable trust. They provide free food to the poor and help with education and healthcare facilities. 
4. Shyam Baba‘s idol is a bit different from the idols we usually see. The idol has a dark complexion and is decorated with very heavy ornaments. The idol is full of energy and power.
